Moving tributes paid by family and friends to 'wonderful, wonderful' steward of Spalding Constitutional Club, the late Dick Morgan

Moving tributes have been paid to the steward of Spalding Constitutional Club, Dick Morgan, who passed away suddenly aged of 57.

Mr Morgan, who previously ran Ye Olde Dun Cow in Cowbit and The Ship in Pinchbeck, was taken ill near the club in Broad Street, Spalding, last Tuesday.

Despite help from passers-by and paramedics, Mr Morgan died at the scene, leaving wife Fiona, two sons and a daughter.

Mr Morgan was best-known for his involvement in Spalding's bowls, darts and snooker scene, as well as for running the "Consti Club" with his wife of nearly 27 years.

Before that, they spent eight years running Ye Olde Dun Cow and 18 months at The Ship.

Mrs Morgan said: "Dick was born in London and then moved with his parents to Cambridgeshire where he went to school in Peterborough.

"In his teens and early 20s, Dick ran a pub called The Carpenters Arms, near Marble Arch, London, so he always had publicans' work in his veins."

After spells working in marketing and then running a painting and decorating company for eight years, the Morgans moved to Cowbit where he became a regular at Ye Olde Dun Cow before taking over as its landlord.

Mrs Morgan said: "After our time at Ye Olde Dun Cow and The Ship, it was a lifestyle choice to take up the opportunity at the Consti Club where you're on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"Yet it's very family-orientated as well and we're very close to our customers.

"Dick would do anything for them customers and he was very involved with them, being the first to volunteer to get involved with anything to be done.

"He was an incredibly loyal person, a friend to many people and always the first to be there for them in times of need."

"I would like to thank all the people who stopped to help Dick when he fell ill in Broad Street last Tuesday and I appreciate everything they did for him."

Family friend Mandy Stancer, landlady at The Lincoln Arms, Spalding, said: "I was devastated when Fiona rang me with the news about Dick last Tuesday, yet so pleased that she rang me herself.

"Dick helped me so much, having been in the pub trade for so many years and knowing lots that I didn't know.

"He just stepped up and stepped in whenever he could, whether it was writing letters or just offering that little bit of advice.

"Dick would bend over backwards to help anybody and everybody, as well as being someone you could rely on and confide in.

"He was a wonderful, wonderful man who will be missed, not just by myself but all the regulars here."

Club president Ray Digby said: "The sudden death of Dick Morgan has come as a terrible shock to the many members of the club.

"Dick was extremely well-known and well-liked by the membership of the club where he had built up many successful activities and charitable events during his tenure of five-and-a-half years as club steward.

"He will be greatly missed and all our thoughts go out to Fiona and his family at this very sad time."

Mr Morgan's funeral is to take place at South Lincolnshire Crematorium, Gosberton Road, Surfleet, on Thursday, February 7 at 2pm.
