An ‘unhappy’ 21 year old, who was unable to climb the stairs without getting out of breath, starts weight loss journey with Spalding group to improve health
An ‘unhappy’ 21 year old - who struggled to climb the stairs without losing her breath - has embarked on a journey to lose weight to improve her lifestyle.
Katie Fitter, of Spalding, took the plunge to make the big change after recognising a decline in her health.
Data provided by weight-loss organisation, Slimming World, has revealed the rising cost of obesity in the UK has soared from £58 billion to £98 billion – with two thirds of adults living as overweight or obese.
The figures also revealed more than four in ten people have thought about losing weight at least once a week without taking action.
Separate data recently released by Lincolnshire County Council revealed around two thirds of adults are overweight or obese - with obesity also affecting a growing number of youngsters.
At her heaviest, Katie weighed 16 stone and 12 pounds.
She said: “I always felt that I was bigger than my friends of a similar age.
“I was unhappy deep down with the way I looked and felt about her own body.
“I could barely make it up the stairs without being out of breath and the thought of having to walk anywhere would make me so anxious.”
Following a diagnosis of Coeliac disease in February last year, Katie was unsure if the intolerance would affect her weight loss goals.
She added: “I called up the group consultant to find out more about how my intolerance would affect my ability to lose weight and I immediately felt that I could achieve my goals.
“I was told there were other members in the group who also had intolerances, and the food optimising plan could be adapted to suit my own needs, tastes and lifestyle.
“If you want to lose weight you absolutely can do it but you have to want to do it. Since joining Slimming World, it has allowed me to gain so many life skills as well as lose weight at the same time.
“When I joined the weight loss group I was 14 stone and 7.5 pounds. I have now lost 1 stone 7 and pounds within 14 weeks.”
