Unsightly pylons are to disappear from the skyline in the area as part of a major initiative to improve power supplies.

Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distributor for the region, is spending £1,350,000 on a programme of works that aims to boost power supplies in West Deeping and Market Deeping.

The first stage of this new initiative, which started in December last year, involved the construction of 3km of new underground cable and 6.5km of new overhead line, using 61 wooden poles next to the existing circuit.

The second phase of the work, which started earlier this month, will see the removal of 9.7km of high voltage overhead lines that run between West Deeping and Bourne, removing what many people see as a blot on the landscape.

About 52 towers are also due to be removed, with the majority to be dismantled within the next two weeks, although one tower will remain in situ until September, after the crops have been harvested.

A spokesman for WPD said: “This work will help to further safeguard supply reliability to more than 9,500 customers in the area.

“It ensures that we can provide a high level of service to these areas in the long term by improving the infrastructure and security of our electricity network.”

Western Power Distribution (WPD) is the distribution network operator for the Midlands, South West England and South Wales, and is responsible for delivering electricity to approximately 7.8 million customers in the UK.
