UPDATE FRIDAY 3.55PM: Spalding police officer attack linked to five other assaults across town

Police are linking the arrest of a man in connection with an attack on an officer with five other assaults in Spalding.

A 36-year-old man is in custody after a spiral of incidents started at a shop in Sheep Market, Spalding, at the end of the morning rush hour..

Reports of a man acting aggressively in Heron Foods reached police at about 8.47am.

The man is then believed to have left the shop and made his way to the Spalding Market shop in Station Street where he was challenged by police.

Inspector Gareth Boxall, neighbourhood policing inspector for South Holland, confirmed that the man is being held in relation to events in both locations, as well as "an earlier incident elsewhere in the town".

The man was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including the assault of a police officer while he was being arrested.

Inspector Boxall said: "I am proud of the professional manner in which our officers dealt with this incident, particularly the officer who was assaulted, "

"I am also grateful to the members of the public who stopped to help us.”

The injured police officer was treated for a head injury at Johnson Community Hospital but he has since been discharged home.

Police are also investigating assaults on five other people and anyone who saw what happened this morning should call 101, quoting incident 88 of July 20.

FRIDAY 9.28AM: Man arrested on suspicion of attacking police officer in Spalding

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attacking a police officer after reports of a disturbance in a Spalding shop this morning (Friday).

Four police cars and a van came to Station Street in response to reports that a man was acting aggressively inside Heron Foods, in nearby Sheep Market, shortly before 8.50am.

One trader said that he saw a person lying on the ground and needing first aid in the aftermath of the incident.

A Lincolnshire Police spokesman said that a 36-year-old "local man" has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.

The man is in custody and will be questioned in due course.
