Footbridge between Spalding and Pinchbeck shut after vandalism

A wooden footbridge that crosses the Vernatt's Drain between Spalding and Pinchbeck has been closed after vandals broke off a handrail.

Lincolnshire County Council says Two Plank Bridge, popular with dog walkers, is expected to be shut for a few days while the bridge is made safe.

The current structure is due to be completely replaced by a 'more substantial bridge' in the summer as part of the works in the Spalding Relief Road project.

Highways assistant director Karen Cassar said: "We've temporarily closed Two Plank Bridge for repairs following someone kicking or pulling one of the handrails off and throwing it into the Vernatt’s Drain.

"As soon as we were made aware of the damage yesterday, we blocked the bridge off on both sides, with a view to having it repaired and back open within the next week.

"This type of vandalism isn't uncommon, so we're looking forward to fully replacing the bridge later this year."

The eventual footbridge and drainage works around Two Plank Bridge are expected to take up to eight months to complete.

The start date for the work is not yet known.
