Spalding Royal Naval Association members honour those who fought in the D-Day landings

Veterans have remembered the sailors who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the D-Day landings.

Spalding Royal Naval Association members did not let the torrential rain stop them from honouring the service personnel who gave their lives during the landings on June 6, 1944.

Members were due to hold a service and lay wreaths around the Second World War memorial in Ayscoughfee Gardens on Friday but were forced inside due to the bad weather.

Association padre, the Rev Barbara Hutchinson, conducted the service in Ayscoughfee Hall which included the laying of wreaths by South Holland District Council chairman Coun Jan Whitbourn.

Rodney Grocock, association member, said: “It was a shame that it rained but as always the Spalding Royal Naval Association showed their true class to support the D-Day commemorations with spirit, honour and courage.”
