Moulton village 1940s event to mark D-Day fostered a ‘brilliant’ atmosphere
A village was abuzz with the sights and sounds of the 1940s as visitors dressed up at an event to mark D-Day and the end of the Second World War.
Moulton Celebration Committee organised military vehicles and singing on the village green on Saturday, which was followed by an evening dance.
Earlier in the week, on the D-Day anniversary, villagers joined a lantern parade and lit the beacon along with the rest of the UK.
Committee member Steven Adcock said: “An event like this is important for remembering as people will soon forget if you don’t put these types of events.
“Everybody enjoyed it and there were lots of people in period costume.
“The sun came out and the village was quite busy with a real buzz.”
Food ran out at the community centre due to the numbers of people attending and many got into the spirit by dressing in 1940 style costumes with the dance selling out.
Mr Adcock said: “The atmosphere at the dance in the evening was brilliant and 75 per cent dressed up in 1940s style.
“People have been asking when we are doing something like this again.
“Everybody came out and engaged and the feedback has been brilliant.”
Sights included vintage cars and tractors along with seven army jeeps with singing and music on the village green.
The Rev Alistair Ward led a small service at the graves of two war heroes in the churchyard and Paul Beecham and Pam Stanley laid poppy wreaths.
The committee is organising the Harvest working weekend which will take place Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 of September from 10am to 4pm.
It will feature a craft fayre and stalls, entertainment, steam engines and tractors.
