Weston's Picnic in the Park on the village playing fields is embraced by the community
The first in a series of new community events for Weston proved to be a colourful success.
Picnic in the Park on Sunday, organised by Love Where You Live in Weston PE12 (Love Weston) community group and held on the village playing field, featured a vintage vehicle display face and rock painting, bouncy castles and a cake stall.
There were also tug-of-war and welly wanging competitions, the latter of which was won by villager Nicky Clarkson who put in a throw of 36metres.
Hayley Hammond, chairman of the Love Weston committee, said: "We were pleased to see so many people who made the effort to support us and we have been overwhelmed by the positive comments about the event.
"There were so many raffle and tombola prizes donated to us that it was amazing, the cakes and savouries sold out by 3pm, the Children’s Zone proved extremely popular and it resulted in children leaving painted rocks hidden around the village.
"My thanks must go to our business sponsors who put their hands in their pockets to support us and the dedicated committee members who tirelessly pulled this together."
Weston parish councillor Raj Odedra, also a Love Weston committee member, said: "I was very pleased with how it went and the event was a big success.
"There was good support from all of the committee members and people in Weston were quite happy with it.
"I've had a lot of good comments from people, some of whom have shown an interest in lending a hand next year, and the committee is ready for another Picnic in the Park."
The event's success was also shown by comments on social media, one of them from Anna Davies who said: "It was wonderful to see the people of Weston enjoying the experience of being a community again."
Another comment from Sara Woodrow said: "Well done to all the organisers for what was an awesome event and, as a village, you should be very proud that you all came together to produce a great fun day out."
