Wingland Airfield's 'Wacky Weekend' in Gedney Dyke raises £1,000 for air ambulance and Macmillan

Gedney Dyke’s Wingfield Airfield opened its fields to a charity event put on by a couple for at least 20 years.

Jenny and Pete Higgins welcomed paragliders and other guests to their annual "Whacky Weekend Fly-In" fundraiser for Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support.

The three-day festival with a difference featured paramotor (powered paragliders) machines and their pilots, alongside a quad bike rides, barbecue, bouncy castle, children’s games, live music, camping and motor home site, raffle and what was billed as "Jenny’s fantastic cakes".

She said: "The fly-in went very, very well and we raised over £1,000 to be shared between the two charities.

"We had a lot of paragliders who turned up with their camper vans over the weekend and I sold 28 lemon drizzle cakes during the three days.

"It was an event where you could just sit down, relax and watch the paragliders coming in to land on the airfield.

"People were so generous throughout the weekend and when they paid for stuff, they would say 'keep the change' or even give another donation on top of it."

Jenny, who worked at Holbeach Hospital for 30 years and Pete are putting the final touches to their second charity event at Wingland Airfield this weekend.

The "Washkosh Fly-In" from Friday until bank holiday Monday, will see helicopter, gyrocopter and paramotor pilots fly in and out of the airfield, helping to raise even more money for Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.

Jenny said: "We host two fundraising events a year, but the Washkosh is where we say to people: 'Whatever you fly, you're welcome'''.
