South Lincolnshire Jerry Green Dog Rescue needs your help during the coronavirus lockdown

We’d like to reassure all of our supporters that our top priority is as always to care for our rescue dogs. Throughout this worrying time our dedic ated teams will continue to provide life changing care, support and love to every dog.

But in order to do this and keep our teams and our supporters who visit us safe and healthy, there are some necessary measures and changes we need to make to the way we operate and fundraise.

We’ve ceased our training and field hire services.

Also...

All volunteer support has been put on hold and many of our events have been cancelled.

Our centres are closed to the public and we have decided to put a hold on rehoming until it is safe for our centres to start holding Meet&Match® visits again.

However, our centres are still contactable and taking adoption and intake enquires via phone and email. If you have any donations, please leave outside the centre or hold on to them for the time being. If you need to contact our South Lincolnshire centre, you can do so on 01205 260546.

These are just some of the measures we are putting in place to protect ourselves and the communities we work in.

We also have a whole section on our website dedicated to doggy entertainment.

As you can imagine these changes will result in huge financial blow for us so we’re asking you for support.

Your donations enable us to do what we do and rehabilitate and rehome rescue dogs who have nowhere else to go.

If you can help, even if it is just £1 our furry friends would be very grateful.

Training tip: How to teach your dog to roll

During this current climate it can be difficult to know what to do with our furry friends, but why not make the most of all this extra time you have with your best friend and teach them a trick or two.

This week we will be teaching our dogs to roll over and you can do it too! For this trick your dog will already need to know a down cue – instructions on how to get them to roll are below:

Ask your dog to go down, then with a treat in your hand hold it closely to their nose and slowly lure their head round so their nose is near their shoulder. Once they are in this position, deliver the reward.

Repeat this step a few times. Once your dog is starting to understand what to do, turn their head towards their shoulder again and gradually start to move your hand further over their shoulder. They should start to lean over and as soon as your dog starts to shift their weight, reward them with a treat.

Gradually increase how much they have to lean for the treat, this can be a bit unnatural for dogs to lean like this so may need a bit more coaxing.

Just remember to take it at your dog’s own pace.

As you increase the lean eventually your dog will end up lying on his side. When this happens reward them with a treat.

Now that they are lying on their side start to move your hand (with the treat) further over their shoulder and away from them so that they follow your hand and roll over.

Make sure your hand movement stays close to their nose otherwise they may be tempted to get up for the treat. Once they rollover treat and repeat until they seem to have the idea of rolling over.

Once they are able to do this consistently with the treat, you can add a cue like ‘roll over’ and slowly start to remove the treat from your hand so they are just following your hand movement and the cue word. Ensure you always reward them once they have performed the trick.

Just remember to make sure your dog is physically able to rollover before you start teaching them the trick and if you have any concerns seek veterinary advice first.
