European Food opens in former Calthrops site in Spalding to sell products from Romania, Turkey and Poland

A new food shop has officially opened in a town centre.

European Food has taken over the former Calthrops offices, which had stood empty in Spalding’s Market Place for some time and attracted vandalism.

Now, it has been given a new lease of life selling mainly Romanian goods along with Polish and Turkish food.

Andrei Vlad, manager said: “We opened a week ago and have had a good response.

“There is a large Romanian community and we welcome everyone here to try our food.

“Our bread is from a Romanian bakery and we use local farms for eggs and the best produce.”

The company has stores in London and most major cities in the country and Mr Vlad sees the store becoming part of Spalding for a decade or more.

He added: ”The prices are good - similar to wholesale prices - so good value.”

Staff member Cristina Bogden, who lives in Holbeach, is encouraging people to visit Romania.

She said: “People have been friendly and it is only a few miles to drive here.

“If you ever get the chance to visit Romania you should go - it is known for Transylvania and Dracula.

“It also has one of the most dangerous roads - the Transfagarasan Highway.”
