WHAPLODE PARISH COUNCIL: New sign planned for Whaplode St Catherine
Whaplode St Catherine is to have its own sign to welcome villagers and visitors.
The sign shows St Catherine, an Eqyptian Christian who died for her faith, a spiked wheel which takes her name and monks who are thought to have used the waterways to travel.
Coun Jan Whitbourn, South Holland District Council member for Whaplode and Holbeach St Johns, said: "A lot of villages have signs so I thought it would be nice if one was organised for Whaplode St Catherine.
"It shouldn't take too long to make and I'm really proud of the design which depicts Whaplode St Catherine in a lovely way.
"We had a look at what the village name means, including St Catherine who was a scholar and is associated with a sword and wheel.
"Also, Whaplode St Catherine used to have an important waterway which the monks used to travel along it to get to certain places.
"I'm paying for it with my district councillor's designated budget and I'll be contacting county highways for the next step.
"But everybody has been wonderful about the sign and I think it will go down well."
