Spalding bakeries say ham salad is South Holland's favourite filling as part of British Sandwich Week
This week is British Sandwich Week -so what’s the district’s favourite filling? Do we prefer a simple staple sandwich or a luxurious treat asks Libby Mayne.
We have asked local bakeries to see what the South Holland’s favourite sandwich truly is.
Most people seem to prefer a hearty, traditional sandwich such as a classic cheese or ham salad snack.
However, Rumblings Cafe in The Crescent say that their most loved sandwich is their ‘chicken bacon mayo’ or ‘Cajun chicken’ sandwich.
In contrast, Curtis Bakery, in Market Place, and Pacey’s say that their ham salad sandwiches are their best selling butty.
George Tear, owner of Pacey’s in Red Lion Street, said: “My customers prefer a more traditional, comfort sandwich such as ham salad, tuna mayo or cheese.”
Across all of Britain, the club sandwich reigns as supreme favourite, but different types of cheese filled sandwiches (cheddar, ploughman’s and grilled) all rank in the top ten, emphasising the nation’s love for traditional, simple sandwiches.
British Sandwich Week celebrates the simplicity of a sandwich in all its glory. Organisers, The British Sandwich and Food to Go Association was established in 1990 to represent businesses involved with the ‘food on the move’ industry.
Every year, we buy over three billion sandwiches in the UK, with the average price being £2.14.
