South Holland leader asks for COVID-19 restrictions to be tailored to infection rates in area

The Leader of South Holland District Council has warned the Government not to lock down the area because of high COVID-19 infection rates elsewhere.

Coun Gary Porter posted a message on social media ahead of an announcement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to introduce a "traffic light" system of coronavirus restrictions across the country.

Posting on Twitter today, Coun Porter said: "If there is an announcement today on the infection rate thresholds to each tier (1, 2 and 3) then this must be set out on a district level, not a county level.

"People don’t live, work or play at a county level, they do it (at) district, or in some cases, sub-district level.

"We won’t be able to credibly tell the residents of South Holland their liberty has to be further curtailed because the infection rate in the city (Lincoln) is going through the roof.

"I hasten to add (that) it’s not going through the roof yet, but the (University of Lincoln) officially starts back today."
