New lease of life for Crowland's Wyevale Garden Centre site?

The former Wyevale Garden Centre in Crowland could get a new lease of life with a variety of businesses.

The Postland Road garden centre closed in May but now there is a planning application to change the use to a mix of business offices, storage and distribution.

Robert Preston, from Carter Jonas, representing Wyevale Garden Centres Ltd, has told South Holland District Council that the planning application should result in more jobs on the site than there were before.

In a document submitted to the council, Mr Preston says: “The proposed development will bring numerous benefits, including the sustainable re-use of a derelict brownfield site and providing a number of new employment units on the site should result in a net gain in employment over and above the former garden centre use.”

Mr Preston says in his report that “the market shows limited demand for a replacement garden centre”.

The application seeks demolition of some sections of the building and external compounds while internal spaces of the building are divided into eight units - although the precise internal arrangements are not yet finalised.

Other proposed changes in the pipeline include alterations to the external goods yard and parking areas - this would create a total of 166 spaces, including six electric charging bays and 10 disabled parking bays, storage for 60 cycles and a new road layout with pedestrian paths and crossings.

Until it closed, the centre had spaces for 99 cars and no dedicated cycle spaces.

Mr Preston says in his report: “The proposed development does not involve any significant changes to the external appearance of the building other than provision of new doors and glazing to serve the units.”
