Spalding and Holbeach residents' wishlist for town centres
Plans to spend £500,000 on regenerating Spalding and Holbeach town centres has sparked a wishlist from residents.
South Holland District Council has unveiled a host of proposals to increase the number of visitors and shoppers to both town centres to support the area's vibrancy.
Since then residents have taken to social media to share what they would like to see and this includes attracting more big names like Primark, moving Holbeach market and latenight buses.
Deputy council leader and Portfolio holder for Growth and Commercialisation Nick Worth said they would look at any suggestions but it cannot always be possible.
He said: "We are going to try to get more of a mixture of retail and leisure. We want to encourage people to come in and spend their time in the town centres.
"A cinema is definitely something we are looking at but more as how we can do something different with the South Holland Centre."
Coun Worth said that some of the shops in Spalding were not large enough to attract big name brands as they require a certain size. However, he said the council may consider buying vacant property with a view of making a bigger space.
He also said that he would like to encourage a bakers to Holbeach and would be looking at the town's car parking. Coun Worth also said the council would be holding talks with bus companies.
He said: "We are always happy to look at things but that does not mean it will happen."
Members of the Cabinet will be looking at the regeneration proposals, which includes creating an arts/heritage trail and a programme of events, on Tuesday.
Holbeach trader Richard Ladbrook has welcomed the proposals, particularly improving the toilets. He said: "Anything that makes the town look better and promotes it has to be good."
Spalding Retailers Association Darren Sutton said: "It is nice that they are investing in the town but it would be nice to have some liaison.
He also said the group was working with Springfields Outlet Centre.
