Call for Lincolnshire shoppers to back independent traders this Christmas from Pinchbeck’s Birchgrove Garden Centre
A leading independent retailer in South Holland is urging residents to ‘shop local’ this Christmas — or face the risk of losing some of our most valued traders.
There’s been a big focus on how to breathe new life into the centre of Spalding recently — with footfall on the decline — but there’s also a big struggle ahead for traders outside the town in the rest of the district and beyond.
Gary Slator, owner of Birchgrove Garden Centre in Pinchbeck, is appealing to the community to support independent shops, warning of the potential loss of valued businesses if action isn’t taken.
He said: “Shopping local isn’t just about keeping businesses afloat; it’s about preserving the personal touch that only independent shops can offer.
“We employ local staff who know the area, understand the needs of our customers, and can help find the perfect product. There’s no waiting around for online deliveries, worrying if they’ll arrive in time for Christmas, or dealing with the hassle of returns if something’s broken or not right.”
Independent retailers say they are facing increased pressure from rising costs. It’s feared that last month’s Government budget announcement of National Insurance increases for employers could result in thousands of pounds of additional costs for small businesses such as Birchgrove. This is compounded by significant increases in energy prices and other expenses that have already stretched resources to breaking point.
Mr Slator added: “These challenges make it harder than ever for independent retailers to survive.
“Without local support, we risk losing the incredible variety of shops that offer unique products and exceptional service. Once these businesses are gone, they’re gone for good.”
Birchgrove, like many others, is hoping to for a boost from the Christmas shopping period.
Its festive attractions include a festive winter wonderland, a Christmas market on December 7 and 8 and Santa’s grotto weekends starting on December 1.
Mr Slator added: “Shopping local helps maintain jobs, supports the community, and keeps our high streets and independent locations vibrant.
“It’s time for us all to think about where we spend our money. Every purchase from a local business this Christmas makes a difference.”
