Spalding woman’s love of cats inspired her to start Moggie Poppins

A lifetime love of cats inspired a Spalding-based woman to start her own business dedicated just for them.

Sophie Smith started her cat sitting business ‘Moggie Poppins’ back in 2020 after working in HR for 11 years.

The change in career came about after Sophie went on maternity leave and was looking for something part time to fit in with her new home life.

After undergoing unsuccessful attempts in finding a part time role, Sophie bit the bullet and thought “why not give this a go”.

She said: “I started the business because I love cats basically!”

Sophie decided to name her business after the popular film character Mary Poppins - which is well known for songs like a Jolly Holiday and Lets Go Fly a Kite.

A day in a life of Moggie Poppins involves visiting her client’s houses either once or twice a day to look after their cats.

Some of the rarest customers have included a bearded dragon and a barn owl, which Sophie descried as being ‘very different’.

Other animals Sophie has looked after include rabbits, tortoises, hamsters, guinea pigs and many more small animals.

Moggie Poppins can also turn lights on and off, put the bins out, bring in any post, water plants and open and close curtains.

Customers will also receive regular updates and photos of their animals whilst they are away.

Animals have always been on the agenda for Sophie throughout her life as she used to want to work with monkeys before going on to a degree in Anthropology studying primates.

She said: “I just love it, I have always owned cats and love them so it’s great for me.”

Sophie’s daughter Daisy also loves cats and likes to help out with some of the regular clients in busy seasons such as the summer holidays and September.

Moggie Poppins offers 20 to 30 minute visits for £10 per visit or 45 minute to 1 hour visits at £16 per visit.
