Runners from south Lincolnshire schools shine at cross country event at Spalding Grammar School
A total of 402 pupils from 12 schools from across the region came together to enjoy cross country races at Spalding Grammar School.
The competitive races, staged last Tuesday, took place between teams from years five and six and three and four, for boys and girls.
Schools could enter teams of 10 runners, with the first five for each team scoring.
The years five and six boys’ event was won by Harry Carruthers (Baston) with Stanley Millar (Abbey) second and Isaac Maclean (Westfield) third.
Abbey were the overall winners with Baston second and Westfield third.
The girls’ event was won by Darcey Campbell (Baston) ahead of Samaria Bajaj (second) and Matilda Knowles (third), both from Westfield.
Baston won the team event with Westfield and Deeping St James in joint second.
Henry Millar (Bourne Abbey) won the years three and four boys’ event, with Alfie Flemming (Westfield) second and Joel Burke (Baston) third.
The team event was won by Baston, with Westfield second and Abbey third.
The girls’ event was won by Lotti Henderson (Westfield). Emmy-Lou Preston (Deeping St James) was second and Naya Gyamfi (Monkshouse) third.
The team event was won by Langtoft with Westfield second and Abbey third.
Other schools competing were Thurlby, Elsea Park, Weston Hills, Moulton John Harrox and Ayscoughfee.
The event was one many competitions and festivals this year organised by Rupert Gibson, the School Games Organiser from Spalding High School,
The event was also run in conjunction with Peterborough & Nene Valley Athletic Club.
Thanks were sent to club volunteers who gave up their time to help run the races, as well as Dave Venables and the Sports Leader students from Spalding Grammar who marshalled the course and provided race hares.
Spalding Grammar School was thanked for the use of their fields - as was Spalding Rugby Club for providing the use of the clubhouse for the occasion.
