Praise for good work

The contractors who worked on the roads in Spalding Cemetery deserve congratulations for a good job well done. Many thanks to them.

Help us help the dying

As we approach Christmas I think back to last year when so many of us had to spend this special time away from the people we love the most. It makes me thankful for the time we hope to spend together this year.

For some people, however, due to terminal illness, it may be the last one they have to spend with their loved ones.

The job of Sue Ryder Nurses like me is to put patients in control, help them make the right decisions and take away some of the pain and practicalities they’re dealing with – giving them more time to focus on things that matter. More time to spend with loved ones, to reminisce, hold hands, hug close and say a proper goodbye.

Heartbreakingly, many families in this position are not receiving the care they need, which is why I am writing to ask for help.

Our care relies on the generosity of communities and organisations raising vital funds for us.

Some recent research showed that palliative care is expected to grow by 55% in the coming decade. Sadly one of the knock on effects of the coronavirus pandemic is that people are being diagnosed with serious illnesses at much later stages. This means we are preparing for many more people to need our specialist care sooner than we expected.

It should not have got this far at all

Regarding Merkur Slots gaining a licence to open in Spalding, certainly there is a lot of objection to this from the general public which does not seem echoed by the responsible authorities consulted.

Perhaps the licensing should move away from being a permissive to non-permissive application system?

Let’s hope the council appeal the licence and does not allow planning permission.

Seems once they have a licence, as there was no objections to it, clearly one may ask on what basis does South Holland District Council have to object the planning process?

It should really not have got this far.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Remember reason for Christmas

Are we nearly there yet? A question anyone with children has probably heard many times! Well, the answer is “Yes, we’re nearly there.” I refer, of course, to Christmas.

Knowing that might send you into panic mode – all that shopping to be done, cards to be written, presents wrapped, and everything in the post that needs sending.

Some may be saying: “Thank goodness for the internet.”

Others may be dreading Christmas for it can be a time when loneliness is heightened, memories of loved ones no longer with us are brought into sharper focus or finances are such that food and presents are limited.

Whichever category you identify with, or somewhere between, may I suggest you pause sometime between now and Christmas Day to remember why we celebrate Christmas, notably the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as a baby, and laid in an animal’s feeding trough because everywhere else was full because a census had also been called just at that time. Mary and Joseph had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem so they also had plenty to sort out and when they got there they, too, might have felt very lonely, even though they were surrounded by crowds. And not long afterwards this family were fleeing as refugees. Jesus came in this way so that he could fully identify with every human circumstance and so that through His birth, life, death and resurrection, and our belief in Him, we may identify with His eternal life.

You may even like to consider attending a carol service on Sunday – there are 30 specifically identified ones across this area (more details at sites.google.com/site/spaldingchurches/diary/2021/christmas-2021) so there’s plenty to choose from!

And, however you will be spending Christmas, may the message of the angels of peace on earth and the presence of the Christ-child be yours in these days and throughout the coming year.
