You have your say on whether mobile phones should be banned from pubs in South Holland
Our recent story, asking if mobile phones and digital devices should be banned in pubs, generated quite a debate among our readers.
We reported earlier this month that Ye Olde White Horse pub in Churchgate, Spalding, is one of those run by the Samuel Smith’s chain, that has rolled out the ban in its watering holes in the UK.
It is believed the pub chain has issued the ban to encourage people to be more sociable.
The brewery’s policy is that if someone receives a phone call they should go outside to take the call in the same way as is required with smoking. Tablets and iPads are prohibited both inside and outside.
So what was your opinion? On our Facebook page Nick Chapman posted: “It will bring back the art of socialising instead of ignoring each other. Learn to talk again. So yes.”
Chris Smith agreed: “Yes,” he posted. “Just step outside if something urgent comes through. No problem.”
Emma Cummins said: “No, I do agree they shouldn’t be used at the table where meals are being eaten and if you hear a message or call then quickly check for emergency purposes, but otherwise put it away.
“But keep it in your possession. . It should be your choice to whether you use your phone or not in a pub especially when paying for just drinks etc.”
But she added that mobiles ringing in the restaurant can be annoying and anti-social, especially if sat at a table with others.
Ann Malle asked: “What about if someone wants to go out on their own and does not want to socialise? And wants to drink on their own, play games on the phone or just scroll it.....?”
Andrew Smalley said: “This is not unusual. We visit several independent pubs that are rammed to the rafters with people and they’re not using phones inside.
“This is unusual as it’s a chain taking the first steps but it might work for them as well.”
