Long Sutton Hockey Club round-up
Josh Baker led Long Sutton's scoring spree with a seven-goal haul in their emphatic home victory over Cambridge City 4ths on Saturday.
Baker's goal blitz helped Sutton smash double figures in their 10-3 win to record a fourth successive East League victory.
The match was Sutton's first game back after the festive break and, despite City's position at the foot of the table, they stayed focused and didn't let complacency seep in.
The game started in usual fashion for the home side as they dominated possession which brought their opening goal as Josh Fyson rounded the runners and finished with aplomb.
The second goal came from a quick counter after one of the only City attacks into the home side's third.
A quality ball played down the left flank from Frazer Watt was perfect for Baker to pounce on as he headed towards the keeper, rounded him to the left and finished nicely into an open goal.
The same man would add two more in the first half, one from a backhand and the other from a deflection thanks to Fyson's assist.
The side would head into the break 4-0 up after they had controlled the half brilliantly round the back and through the middle with great energy and intensity.
The likes of Jimmy Harrison, Michael Donaghy, Fyson, Sam Gray, McKenzie East and Dan Batten really helped to command things through the centre of the pitch.
Dan Oldfield, Luke Proctor, Stefan Fox, Nick Ellis, Olly Taylor, Brad Sargeant and Watt were all pivotal in the wide areas, hitting City on countless attacks.
The second half began much the same for the first 10 minutes but Sutton would soon lose hold of their clean sheet as City pulled one back.
More goals were to come for the home side though as Sargeant added one of his own with a thunderbolt of a strike on his back foot into the top right corner.
Baker would shortly add his fifth followed by Gray bagging his first of the season.
City would then score a third to take the score to 8-3 but Sutton reacted well.
Two more goals from Baker thanks to brilliant work from the likes of Sargeant and Batten meant the scoreline finished 10-3.
It was a great result to keep hold of second spot and Saturday sees a massive game at the top end of the table, away to local rivals Bourne Deeping.
The men's third team went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Newmarket with Adam Pack scoring their goal.
The ladies' first team shared the spoils in a goalless draw with St Neots 2nds while Sutton's second string lost 1-0 at St Neots 4ths in a pre-second half of the season friendly.
Katie Whittaker capped a fine game in the centre of midfield by being named player of the match.
