Bourne Grammar School lift Elite Eleven 2018 title ahead of 11 other secondary schools at Boston College in front of special guests boxer Callum Johnson and golfer Billy Spooner

Bourne Grammar School are this year’s "Elite Eleven Target Team" winners after a day of competition at Boston College.

The annual sporting event brought 12 schools, including Spalding Academy, Thomas Cowley High School, Donington, Bourne Academy, Thomas Middlecott Academy, Kirton, and Kirkstone House School, Baston, to Boston's Peter Paine Performance Boston, for the annual event.

Elite 11 is an inter-school sporting competition where teams of Year 10 and 11 students compete 11-a-side in a variety of practical sporting activities.

These include golf putting, memory, fitness, vertical jump and darts challenges, all to test the students' teamwork, resilience and determination throughout the day.

Bourne Grammar School finished ahead of Bourne Academy and The Deepings School who occupied the top three places.

Steve Allen, head of PE at The Deepings School, said: "During the day, students also had a session run by LiNCHigher which was about different career options in sport and possible options to study sport in a further education setting.

"The students were excellent and did themselves, and the school, extremely proud, both in terms of effort, as well as their attitude throughout the day.

"Overall, the Deepings School finished third which is a fantastic achievement considering the event includes students from Years 10 and 11.

"On behalf of the students involved, I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Boston College for their hard work in organising and running the event."

Meanwhile, Spalding Academy finished sixth, Thomas Cowley High School came seventh, Thomas Middlecott Academy eighth and Kirkstone House School were twelth.

It was the largest turnout of schools and students for the Elite Eleven event to date and the day took on a real sporting feel, with a full awards ceremony and special guest appearances by golfer Billy Spooner and boxer Callum Johnson.

Just two months ago, the Commonwealth and British Light-Heavyweight Boxing champion was unsuccessful in his challenge for the World Light-Heavyweight title in Chicago, USA.

As well as the "Target Team Award" trophy, each member of the successful Bourne Grammar School team received a pair of EP headphones and a poster signed by Johnson.

James Wright, programme area manager for sport at Boston College, said, "The event ran exceptionally well and the effort, determination and passion of the competing students made their teachers and schools very proud.

"A big thanks to Callum Johnson and Billy Spooner who inspired and informed students about elite performance, and also to our event sponsors, Boston United Football Club, SneakerBoys, Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre and Freshdrop."

LiNCHigher’s area engagement officer, Ellis Potter, said: "I hope that everyone involved enjoyed Elite Eleven and it was great to see students from all over the county come together and take part in the events and the LiNCHigher workshop.

"Elite Eleven was a great opportunity to really capture the interests of the young people involved and show them that sport, something they enjoy in and out of school, is a course and career they can pursue at a higher education level, both locally and further from home.

"I would like to take the opportunity to say a massive thank you to everyone involved in pulling the event together and, once again, for the great support from the schools.

“I hope that all of the students left with the knowledge that higher education is not only achievable for them, but also something they can and will enjoy, and something they can all aspire towards.”

The day also included a question and answer session with Callum and Billy who also presented the prizes to the winning teams.

Bourne Grammar School's winning "11" were Matthew Wright, Leo Clack, Tim Schoutsen, Will Hawkins, Dan Teesdale, Hollie Lewis, Sean Bedford, Evie Price, Ethan Thomas, Jake Jungmann and Finn McCullough.

Speaking after the event, Joanne Maher, principal and chief executive officer for Boston College, said "It was fantastic to see all of the young and motivated learners representing their school and aspiring to be crowned this year’s champions.

"The event was an amazing opportunity for those who participated to show both their physical and mental skill set and I would like to congratulate all those who took part."
