Reaction from Jimmy Dean after taking over as the new Spalding United manager
New Tulips boss Jimmy Dean has got the footballing buzz back again after his first few days working with the Spalding United players.
Dean took charge of his first training session last week following his appointment as Elliot Sandy's successor.
It marked his return to management after departing National League North club Scunthorpe United at the end of last season.
Dean said: "You do worry where you're at with football but I went into training on Thursday and, after I came away, I got that buzz straight back from working with the boys.
"They're good boys who are winners and it hasn't all gone wrong in a few months. We've just got to settle things down again.
"We've got a good nucleus here who we can work with. We'll keep making small steps."
Dean's initial aim is to stabilise the club in the Southern League Premier Division Central following last season's title-winning campaign under Sandy.
Spalding are currently second-from-bottom of the table with just one win from their opening five league games.
Dean added: "I've come into it with us in a relegation battle.
"We've got to stablise ourselves at this level and that's the first thing we want to do.
"It's not going to be an easy task and we have got work to do. We've got to try and do that work and get fit while we're playing games.
"It was a positive to keep a clean sheet on Saturday and the boys gave me everything and I thought we looked good out of possession for 75 or 80 minutes. We were really switched on.
"We were missing that little bit of quality but we have got it 100 percent within the squad."
Dean has brought in three new signings during his first week as Tulips boss.
Lamine Sherif has returned to the club from league rivals Barwell after helping the Tulips to their title triumph last term.
Former Peterborough United player Jordan Nicholson has joined from St Ives having previously worked with Dean at Peterborough Sports.
Winger Layton Ndukwu finished last season with Coalville Town and previously played for Leicester City, Southend and Portsmouth during the early stages of his career.
However, Dean insists the ball is in the court of the current players as to whether he continues his recruitment drive.
He commented: "Our ears are to the ground but it's in the players hands and we don't want to rip anything up.
"They've got the club promoted and, although they've had a bad start, it's in their hands where they want to go with it and there were some real positives on Saturday."
Former Queens Park Rangers and Peterborough United player Chris Plummer will again be part of Dean's management team.
The duo worked together at both Peterborough Sports and Scunthorpe United and will again be joined by strength and conditioning coach Antony Coombe.
