Former Bolton Wanderers, Plymouth Argyle and Ipswich Town footballer David Norris plays for Whaplode Drove in the final of the Peterborough Junior Cup

It was an eventful evening for former Football League ace David Norris as Whaplode Drove Rovers were involved in a remarkable penalty shoot-out on Friday night.

Norris was playing for the Peterborough League Division One side in the final of the Challenge Cup against Netherton United at Deeping Rangers.

The match finished 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes before Rovers lost 10-9 on penalties after 26 spot kicks were taken in the shoot-out.

The ex-Bolton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Plymouth Argyle player was at the heart of the drama as he set up the second goal to give Whaplode a 2-0 lead at half-time before they were pegged back in the second period.

Norris saw his first penalty saved by Netherton goalkeeper Jamie Stephens before hitting the crossbar with the final spot kick as the length of the shoot-out forced players to go again.

Whaplode had started strongly against their Division One rivals in a game which attracted a crowd of more than 400 to the Haydon Whitham Stadium.

Former Deeping player Avi Vieira gave them the lead just past the half-hour mark with a close range finish after a superb double save from Stephens.

Norris then created the opening for Adam Richardson to double the lead shortly after and give Whaplode a two-goal advantage at the break.

That was reduced just before the hour mark when Frazer Garner headed home from a corner for Netherton.

Another set piece brought their equaliser with 10 minutes remaining as Lewis McManus got the Peterborough side back onto level terms.

Vieira came close to snatching the winner for Whaplode in the eight minutes of stoppage time before the final went to the epic shoot-out.

Netherton netted both of their opening two penalties before Norris' was saved after Harley Williams had scored for Whaplode.

Drove goalkeeper Donatas Motuzis then saved the fourth Netherton penalty as Andy Irvine scored for Whaplode to make it 3-2.

Netherton then put their next penalty over the crossbar as Whaplode levelled with their fifth spot kick to send the tie to sudden death.

Motuzis again saved with the score at 4-4 before Vieira saw his spot kick brilliantly turned onto the crossbar by Stevens and the shoot-out rumbled on.

Both goalkeepers were then among those successful from the spot with the shoot-out staying level as the players stepped up for a second time.

Motuzis again put Whaplode into a position to win the cup when he saved but his exploits were matched by Stephens to deny Williams a second time around.

Charlie Pywell then put Netherton into a 10-9 lead before Norris hit his second spot kick over as a dramatic shoot-out went against Whaplode who'd had two chances to win the cup.
