Round-up of the action from Long Sutton Hockey Club

Long Sutton put right the wrongs of previous weeks as they scored eight goals in Saturday's East League Division 2NW victory over Cambridge City Veterans.

They had beaten Spalding 2nds on the opening day of the season but had since lost to St Ives and Cambridge City 4ths so they went into Saturday's match looking to get some much-needed and frankly and much-deserved points on the board.

They took the game to their visitors from the off and quickly found themselves two goals up inside 10 minutes.

Josh Fyson opened his tally from a neatly-taken short corner before Nick Ellis netted with a fine shot from top of the D into the bottom corner.

Previously the team may have slowed down the pace but Sutton continued in the same vein and again punished the away team's defence.

Fyson added his second with a reverse hit through the keeper's legs before Tyler Hagan slapped a Brad Sargeant cross into the netting for a four-goal interval lead.

Sutton again started the second half well but were unfortunate to concede a goal first off.

This spurred the side on and they soon made it impossible for the ball to leave the Cambridge half.

The defence of Matt Holmes, Dan Oldfield and Michael Donaghy worked the ball around the back well and upward to the forwards who were unfortunate to not add to the scoreline with Josh Baker hitting the post and crossbar with his efforts.

Cambridge's goalkeeper was then dismissed for five minutes after having words with the umpires as Sutton fought hard to add to their tally.

Fyson completed his hat-trick with a neat deflection over the last two defenders' sticks before tapping home his fourth high into the goal on the keeper's return to action.

Baker then netted with a neat reverse shot before Proctor finished the scoring for the day by tapping in a Luke Jackson cross.

Cambridge fought hard and their short corners were well defended as Sutton saw out their victory.

Long Sutton 2nds made it four wins out of four in Division 4NW with a narrow one-goal victory over Kettering 3rds.

Having recorded their first win last week, Kettering were no mugs and their well drilled approach gave Sutton their hardest game of the season so far.

Sutton soon took control and dominated possession thanks to their miserly defence of Tom Baguley, Simon Clarke, Adam Taylor and Ben Hales who supported the midfield duo of Ed White and Stefan Fox superbly.

Tom Burton once again drove in midfield alongside Frazer Watt and, with Alex Canham, Lewis Shooter and the ever-willing runner Olly Taylor always looking to be available, it seemed only a matter of time before Sutton took the lead.

However, they didn't and half-time arrived with the game still goalless as nervousness set it with Sutton huffing and puffing but not being able to blow the Kettering house down and it became apparent that it wasn't going to be a goal-fest.

Kettering pushed Sutton a little by making Baguley and Clarke work while Fox adopted his favoured role to drive the side forward towards the visiting goal.

Adam Sisson continued his pleasing habit of collecting clean sheets and eventually Sutton managed a passage of decent play that resulted in Burton earning a short corner.

White injected well and, after some excellent interplay with Watt, Fox finally broke the defence with a clinical finish.

Kettering could count themselves a little unlucky as they are clearly a well organised team and played to a good game plan and it took a genuine bit of quality to open them up.

They will climb the table as the season goes on while unbeaten Sutton will look to build on their strong start to the season.

The men's third team went down to a 3-0 home defeat against St Ives while both ladies teams played out goalless draws against Cambridge Nomads and Kettering.
