Holbeach United are held to a home draw by Haverhill Borough

Holbeach missed the chance to move back into the Thurlow Nunn League Division One North play-off places after a frustrating home stalemate on Saturday.

The Tigers were held to a goalless draw at Carter's Park by bottom of the table Haverhill Borough.

With fifth-placed AFC Sudbury Reserves losing at home to title-chasing Great Yarmouth, Holbeach could have leapfrogged the Suffolk side with victory over their visitors.

They had shown glimpses of promise during the game but assistant manager Chris Carter felt the Tigers were missing a creative spark to unlock a battling Borough side.

He said: "I thought we started with good energy but then fell into a system which suited them.

"They had come to do a job and we didn't have that cutting edge like we usually have which was a bit disappointing.

"We were bright again at the start of the second half and moved the ball better and it looked like we had clicked into gear.

"There was a faster tempo. We had good spells and huffed and puffed but that creativity and decision-making in the final third wasn't as sharp as we normally are."

The Tigers did have an effort disallowed in the second half when Ryan Cook was flagged offside after putting the ball into the net as they were unable to turn their dominance into goals.

Carter added: "It's a point more than we had but it's still disappointing not to have taken all three.

"We're still in there among the pack but it was disappointing because it was an ideal chance to get another two more points on the board.

"All the teams seem to be beating each other at the moment and then those behind us are also getting closer now which could make for an interesting run-in."

The point keeps Holbeach in sixth spot, one adrift of AFC Sudbury Reserves, with the Tigers having a game in hand on the Suffolk side.

They are at home again on Saturday when Diss Town are the visitors.

The home match against Great Yarmouth - which was postponed the previous weekend - has been rearranged for Wednesday, February 21, with an 8pm kick-off.
