Deeping Rangers move up to fourth place thanks to third successive league win

The great entertainers are certainly giving value for money.

Eight league games have so far produced an aggregate score of 27-17 in Deeping Rangers' favour.

The Clarets are keeping up their reputation for free-flowing football and lots of goalscoring chances.

Going forward, they are usually wonderful to watch.

Defensively, though, it's simply not good enough.

The protection has gone and there are far too many opportunities for the opposition when it's wide open like this.

There could have been another crazy scoreline just like Saturday's 9-5 win at Anstey Nomads.

Deeping missed chances to add to the tally on Tuesday night - but, equally, it was a surprise that Desborough Town didn't get more goals.

Prolific scorer Jordan Macleod wasted the best opening in the first half and Jack Gurney's corner bounced off the far post.

Two minutes before the break, Phil Bilson had a simple finish for Ar Tarn after Danny Bircham failed to collect the ball at the near post.

Rangers were back on level terms 80 seconds after the restart as Gurney fed Josh Moreman who marked his return with another goal.

Macleod nodded over and Luke Stevens restored Desborough's advantage following a mistake by Aaron Davies against his former club.

Five minutes later, Sam Murphy released Scott Mooney who found the bottom corner of the net with a clinical strike.

Murphy was denied by a deflection but Mooney made it 3-2, converting Gurney's corner at the second attempt.

Chris Jones produced an incredible point-blank save from Tom Garrick's header and Moreman hit the crossbar moments later.

Bircham was kept busy, notably when he made a vital block from Nathanial Ansu.

Deeping finally made it more comfortable when David Burton-Jones nodded home the fourth goal.

A third successive league win - scoring 18 times during that spell - lifted the Clarets into fourth place.

However, they are 10 points off the top and looking too fragile defensively.

Deeping will continue to create those chances - but they are all over the place at the other end of the pitch.
