Tulips boss Easton: 'I want us to offer something to get excited about'

Matt Easton’s aim is simple - for Spalding United to have something good to look forward to late on in the season.

The Tulips start their BetVictor Northern Premier League South East Division campaign on Saturday with a tricky-looking trip to the artificial pitch of the returning Sutton Coldfield Town.

However, manager Easton is in upbeat mood after a fairly settled pre-season which has allowed him to work on a formation and style.

“We’ve got good enough players that, with a bit of good luck and good grace along the way, we should have an enjoyable season,” he said. “We’ve got to be looking for something exciting to play for when the season ends, whatever that may be.”

He added: “I’ve learnt in pre-season that we can get the ball down and play. If we can keep possession then we can dictate the flow of the game.”

The flirtation with relegation and the pay issues which troubled the club at the end of last season are now just a memory.

Easton admitted: “If we don’t improve on last season then I shouldn’t be here.

"Hopefully, the stability that we have now allows us to push on because if you’re not looking for the upper echelons of the league then you shouldn’t be a manager.”

One concern is that the Tulips’ squad lacks depth and that will be tested on Saturday with Ben Greenwood, Neal Spafford, Scott Floyd and injured Archie Moyses all unavailable.

Meanwhile, George Zuerner is struggling and Jamie Jackson faces a late fitness test.

The Tulips then host Loughborough Dynamo on Tuesday (7.45pm) which Easton sees as a yardstick after being played off the park and well-beaten by them towards the end of last season.

“It’s a tough start for us but we’ve got one or two things that we can try out,” he added.
