The 10th staging of the Steve Newman Memorial takes place at King’s Lynn

It was an emotional night for the Newman family at King’s Lynn on Saturday.

The 2L Stock Cars were contesting the 10th staging of the Steve Newman Memorial.

Steve was one of Spalding's most popular stock car drivers who very sadly paid the ultimate price for his love of the sport in a freak accident.

Steve's 20-year-old son Billy had also chosen the night to debut in the formula in a car which was resplendent in his father's colour scheme of a bright pink car and yellow bumper.

Virtually every driver sported a yellow bumper on their car in remembrance of Steve and as always the meeting attracted a good turn-out of cars.

It was a great debut for Billy who sat in second place in his father’s memorial race for the first four laps as he chased fellow Spalding racer Rob Heanes.

Newman then crashed out and was down in 18th place but battled his way back up to 10th spot, passing many fancied names and also winning the award as the best white grade finisher.

Former multi champion Diggy Smith took the chequered flag and it was wonderful to see how he embraced Billy following the win.

Despite Diggy’s success in the sport, he had never won the memorial race before and, when interviewed afterwards, he delightedly exclaimed how winning it meant more to him than the World Final – some indication how Steve is still regarded by those he has left behind.

Billy went on to record two more eighth place spots in what was one of the more successful debuts in the formula seen in recent years.

He said: "What a night and what a buzz.

"I can't thank everyone enough who wished me luck or well. To get 10th and highest placed white top in dad's memorial race was more than I could have hoped for.

"I would like to thank all those who helped sponsor my dad's race and I would also want to say thank you to everyone who helped to keep the car going on Saturday and all the sponsors on it."

A great night for the area's fans was followed by Rowan Venni taking two hard-fought wins.

Racing returns to King's Lynn this Saturday (5pm) for the annual Pre 80 Banger meeting with racing also coming from the 1300 Stock Cars.
