Formula One driver George Russell finishes in fourth place in the Singapore Grand Prix
George Russell ended his run of poor performances in Singapore as he scored points for the first time at the Marina Bay circuit on Sunday.
Despite a fourth place finish, Russell was described as 'overheating' at the end of the race and had to miss his media duties due to his condition.
The weekend did not start well for the driver from Tydd St Giles as he failed to make the top five in the two Friday practice sessions and ended his second outing in the wall.
Despite this, Russell had a stronger qualifying where, despite tyre struggles, he made his way through to the final stage where he took fourth place - 0.026 seconds behind his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Starting alongside Hamilton on the medium tyre, Russell had a decent get away as he held position on the opening lap and through the early stages of the main race.
Russell then made his pit stop on lap 28 onto hard tyres which brought him out ahead of his team-mate in eighth after Hamilton had been disadvantaged by running the soft compound on the start.
Under the Singapore lights, Russell had made his way up to third place before he came under pressure from McLaren's Oscar Piastri.
In the closing stages of the race, the Australian made his way past Russell as Piastri had considerably fresher tyres and a faster car.
With 10 laps to go, Russell brushed the wall and there was concern that his race would end in a similar fashion to last year - with a spectacular crash - but he crossed the line in fourth.
Russell said: "After a very difficult Friday, we would have likely taken fourth place in the Grand Prix. Our pace in qualifying however made us believe we could achieve more.
"It was no doubt a difficult race for us, both challenging in terms of our pace but also physically. The McLarens were very impressive and in another league to us while Max (Verstappen) had the legs on us.
"We were able to hold off the Ferrari of Charles (Leclerc) in the closing stages, so it was very much an evening of damage limitation. Given the pace of the car, that was the very best we could have achieved.
"We have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks to understand why we’ve struggled to challenge at the front in the past few races. We haven’t been as competitive since the summer break and that is frustrating.
"We will work hard to get on top of it though and hopefully the updates we bring to the next race in Austin will help us take a step closer to the front."
The 2024 Formula One season continues on October 18-20 for the United States Grand Prix.
