Scott Williams is out of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship after defeat to Ricardo Pietreczko

Scott Williams saw his Paddy Power World Championship dreams dashed after defeat to Ricardo Pietreczko on Saturday afternoon.

The Swineshead player was beaten 4-1 by the German in the third round of the tournament at the Alexandra Palace.

Willams had lost the opening set in his earlier victories over Niko Springer and former world champion Rob Cross.

And, despite opening up with a 99 average, it was Pietreczko who struck first to leave Williams playing catch up again.

Pietreczko, who was making his World Championship debut, doubled his advantage with a strong showing in the second set where he averaged more than 100.

Williams halved the deficit with victory in the third set where he narrowly missed a bullseye for a maximum 170 check-out.

However, the Green Dragon player was unable to keep up with Pietreczko who romped to victory in the fourth set with a 118 average.

He sealed his success in style by taking out a 121 finish in the fifth set to secure his place in the last 16 where he will face Nathan Aspinall after one of the best performances of his career.
