Holbeach United lose to Droitwich Spa in the FA Vase

Three second half goals sent Holbeach United tumbling out of the FA Vase on Saturday.

The Tigers were beaten 3-0 by Droitwich Spa in their first round clash at Carter's Park with all of the visitors' goals coming after a scoreless first half.

Although Holbeach had home advantage for the match, they faced an unbeaten Worcestershire side in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.

Droitwich are currently top of Division One of the Hellenic League with nine wins and a draw from their opening 10 games.

Holbeach had the best chance of the opening exchanges with an unmarked Dan Roberts heading over from a corner.

Harvey Thorne then saw a shot turned away by Dom Rogerson in the Spa goal before the visitors' best chance of the first half fell to Charlie Tilley who shot wide from Kyonn Evans' flick-on.

Droitwich then started to get on top of the game with Tigers goalkeeper Josh Simpson keeping out an effort from Perry Moss.

Sam Carey then saw an effort cleared off the line before Evans shot over after bursting through with Simpson also clinging onto a speculative effort from Moss as the first half ended goalless.

However, Holbeach fell behind 11 minutes into the second half as Moss rifled home a superb strike from 25-yard to put the visitors ahead.

Simpson then produced a string of fine saves to prevent Droitwich from extending their advantage.

He showed remarkable reflexes to keep out a powerful close range shot from Moss before foiling Tilley in a one-on-one.

Moss, however, was first to the rebound where he was brought down and then stepped up to score from the spot.

Holbeach looked for a response and Jordan Oldham headed over while Ryan Cook was denied by a brilliant block from Rogerson.

With the Tigers pushing more players forward in search of a goal, Droitwich wrapped up the win late on as Josh Hurdman raced clear before firing past Simpson.

Holbeach return to Thurlow Nunn League Division One North action tomorrow night (Wednesday) when they travel to face Whittlesey.

The Cambridgeshire side picked up their first win of the season at the weekend with a 5-0 home victory over Diss.

It was the first match in charge for their new management team of Kev Gilbert and Adam Moore who have been promoted from the reserves following the departure of Liam De Silva.
