Spalding United complete Northern Premier League Midlands double over Corby Town
Spalding United 1 Corby Town 0
Spalding United ended a two-month wait for a home win as they completed a Northern Premier League Midlands double over Corby Town.
Ben Seymour-Shove scored the only goal of the game six minutes into the second half of a dull affair at the Sir Halley Stewart Field.
It was the perfect start to the Easter period for Brett Whaley's side who continued Corby Town's wretched run of form against Lincolnshire sides this campaign.
Former Boston United and Holbeach goalkeeper Michael Emery lined-up for the Tulips while midfielder Liam Marshall faced his former club.
It was a delayed start at the Sir Halley Street Field with the visiting Steelmen forced into a late kit change of yellow shirts and purple shorts in Lincolnshire and their cause wasn't helped when Joe Curtis limped off to be replaced by Gary Kennedy with less than ten minutes on the clock.
The game was largely devoid of goalmouth action in the first half with Seymour-Shove's deflected cross collected quickly by Ben Heath between the Corby Town posts after 20 minutes.
Corby's Sam Moore fluffed his lines in the Spalding box midway through the first period before the Tulips broke quickly up the other end of the field and Seymour-Shove forced Heath into the first proper save of the contest.
Spalding were by far the more adventurous of the two sides as the first half wore on as they looked to end a disappointing run of form on their own patch.
Aaron Hart was booked for the hosts after a reckless challenge on Jordon O'Brien but Gary Mills' side offered very little going forward in the opening half.
Seymour-Shove's centre had Corby scrambling to clear their lines as the visitors struggled to find any kind of rhythm on a dry and bobbly surface.
The Tulips thought they had opened the scoring four minutes into the second half but Seymour-Shove's effort from a Liam Marshall free-kick was ruled out by the offside flag.
But the home faithful didn't have to wait too much longer to see their side go in front as Seymour-Shove finished well past Heath two minutes later.
Spalding's opener seemed to spark the visitors into some kind of urgency for the remainder of the contest.
Sam Moore hooked an effort over the woodwork while Ben Garwood's shot was comfortably dealt with by Emery as a poor Corby Town outfit finally began to rally.
A dipping effort from visiting substitute Jack Kennedy had Emery back-tracking but luckily for the hosts the ball floated over the woodwork.
Substitute Gregg Smith teed up a great chance for Dylan Edge ten minutes from time but the frontman could only fire his shot at the legs of Heath with the goal at his mercy.
Smith had the ball in the net late on but his header was ruled out for offside.
Next up for the Tulips is a trip to Carlton Town on Monday (3pm).
