Spalding United lose to Banbury United in the Southern League Premier Division Central

Spalding saw their 11-match unbeaten run end after an away loss at Banbury United in their Southern League Premier Division Central clash on Saturday.

The Tulips went down to a 2-1 away reversal and have dropped down to 10th place in the table after suffering their first league loss since the home defeat against Bishop's Stortford on November 16.

Joe Nyahwema's goal had cancelled out Jaanai Gordon's opener for the Puritans before Alex Prosser struck the home side's winner with 13 minutes remaining.

Tulips boss Jimmy Dean was frustrated by the final outcome after feeling that his side had been the better team.

He said: "It was a really tough one to take.

"I thought that, all things considered, it was a good performance.

"I felt we were the better side and had a lot of opportunities.

"When we got into our groove in the middle part of the game, we created chance after chance but we haven't made them count which is the frustrating thing for me."

Spalding had made the trip to Oxfordshire without the services of Liam Moore, Connor Brown and Kieron Freeman while Darnell Johnson has departed the club.

Lamine Sherif made a welcome return to the starting line-up for a Spalding side who found themselves trailing after just 10 minutes.

Gordon took possession 25 yards out and unleashed a fierce strike that flew into the corner of the Spalding net past the diving Aaron Chapman.

Nyahwema had gone close for the Tulips before Banbury's opener and then Sherif sent a shot over from Dion Sembie-Ferris' lay-off after Spalding had fallen behind.

Glenn Walker was unable to convert following a Spalding corner while Nyahwema sent another effort over the home goal.

James Clifton had a shout for a penalty rejected after going down in the area while Gordon saw a header saved by Chapman following a Banbury free-kick.

Spalding then got back on level terms on the stroke of half-time as Nyahwema cut inside and rifled home his finish off the inside of the post.

It sent the sides in level at half-time with Spalding having an early chance after the break but Maniche Sani was unable to get enough power in his shot.

Tai Fleming looped a shot into the side-netting for the Puritans before Sherif's through ball sent Bart Cybulski clear but he was unable to get the better of home goalkeeper Jack Harding who made a fine save.

Dan Jarvis was inches away from converting a Connor Ferguson cross at the back post for the hosts before Prosser saw a shot from the edge of the area blocked.

Chapman kept out an effort from Tim King before Banbury regained the lead in the 77th minute with a superb strike from Prosser who volleyed home a sweet hit after the ball had been cleared into his path.

Jonny Ngandu and Callum Chettle were both introduced from the substitutes but Spalding were unable to find a way back into the contest and fell to a narrow away loss.

Spalding are back in action at the Sir Halley Stewart ground on Tuesday night when they host Scunthorpe United in the semi-final of the Lincolnshire Senior Cup (7.45pm).
