Spalding United score five goals in their away win at Lowestoft Town in the Southern League

Five-star Spalding United produced a sparkling performance to edge closer to the play-off spots with an emphatic victory at Lowestoft Town on Saturday.

The Tulips ran out 5-0 winners to record a third successive victory in the Southern League Premier Division Central.

It moved Jimmy Dean's side to within two points of a coveted top five spot after an impressive all-round performance.

Dan Lawlor struck twice with Jack Roberts, Sam Cartwright and Kieron Freeman also scoring in a third successive league win for the Tulips.

They have now netted 12 times in the last three games and, unlike the previous wins over Biggleswade and Hitchin, refused to let their opponents back into the game.

Boss Dean said: "The last two games before Saturday both had the potential to go on and be like it was at Lowestoft.

"It was our fault that it wasn't and, although we won both games, it was a little bit worrying.

"We were looking for a performance as well as a result and it felt really good to have a 90-minute performance."

Spalding had suffered a setback in the warm-up when Joe Nyahwema pulled up with an injury which saw the versatile Glenn Walker moved into an attacking role with Connor Brown coming in at full-back.

The unplanned disruption didn't affect the Tulips though as they started slowly with Liam Moore going close with an early header.

The deadlock was then broken in the 19th minute when Roberts received the ball just outside the area and smashed home his third goal in as many games.

Lawlor then repeated the feat with a fierce finish six minutes before the break to give Spalding control of the contest going into the interval.

They had what the Tulips felt was a stone-wall penalty turned down in the second half when Dion Sembie-Ferris was felled in the box.

However, a third goal duly arrived just before the hour mark when Cartwright guided the ball into the net from a set piece.

Freeman curled in the fourth goal from a free-kick before Lawlor completed the rout with an injury-time penalty to give manager Dean his first-ever victory at the Suffolk club.

He commented: "It's a ground I've never won at before and Lowestoft had beaten Hitchin and drawn with Kettering in their last two home games.

"They make it really difficult for you and it's a tough place to come after a long travel so to start the way we did and play the way we did was really pleasing.

"I thought we were playing well early doors without getting the goal which we deserved but the strikes from Jack and Dan really helped us on our way.

"They had to chase the game after that and we could pick our moments to pick them off. I thought our pressure on the ball was superb.

"The structure of the team was fantastic and I couldn't think of a bad performance which is where we want to be.

"Everyone bought into it and was assimilated which shows what we're capable of."

Spalding are on their travels again on Saturday as they visit second-placed AFC Telford United.
