Long Sutton Hockey Club round-up

A workmanlike performance moved Long Sutton further up the table in Division 1N of the East League after a 3-1 away success at St Ives on Saturday.

Despite their hosts being bottom of the table, they were not a team that Sutton could take lightly.

The match was evenly poised for some while before Long Sutton gradually gained control.

However, they were thwarted by some excellent defending which kept out four short corners.

Sutton's defence and midfield limited the chances for their hosts with Jimmy Harrison, Luke Proctor, Stefan Fox, Tom Baguley and Sam Gray holding firm.

The deadlock was broken after 25 minutes when a smart through ball was picked up by Josh Fyson and, as he moved into the circle, he timed a perfect square ball to Josh Baker who at full stretch stroked it into the back of the net.

The second half saw St Ives having much of the possession but they were unable to work the ball into a scoring position.

A quick break by the visitors and some swift passing moves after 55 minutes found Fyson with one defender to beat and he calmly slotted the ball home.

Five minutes later, a replica move again found Fyson who crashed the ball into the top of the net as Sutton's success steered them into eighth spot in their first season at the higher level after winning promotion last term.

Sutton's second team went down to a 5-4 home loss to City of Peterborough 5ths with Ed Hales (two) and Ed White among their goalscorers while the thirds were beaten 4-1 by Bourne Deeping.

The ladies' first team were 2-0 away winners at Pelicans while Aimee Betts and Annabelle Giles were on target for the second string in their 3-0 success over the King's Lynn club's third team.
