Spalding United manager Elliot Sandy looks ahead to their clash with Robbie Savage’s Macclesfield side

Manager Elliot Sandy wants to see his Spalding United side raise their levels ahead of their final home pre-season friendly tonight (Tuesday).

The Tulips host Northern Premier Division side Macclesfield in their penultimate match ahead of the start of their league campaign on August 10.

Spalding go into the match after a 2-0 away win at Grantham Town in the Lincolnshire Senior Cup on Saturday.

Goals from Tyler Winters and Lewis Darlington earned Spalding a semi-final spot after victory over their Northern Premier League Midlands Division hosts.

However, Sandy felt the game was 'flat' and wants to see more from his players in tonight's tussle with the Silkmen who are managed by former Leicester City and Derby County player Robbie Savage.

The Spalding boss said: "It was a really flat game on Saturday.

"Grantham kept their shape and sat in to let us have the ball so it was a comfortable win and it should have been more.

"We need to up our levels though. We're now two games away from the real stuff starting so we can't be turning up flat and going through the motions."

It was two goals in the opening period that secured victory for the Tulips who took the lead after 25 minutes when Darlington steered home a cross from Josh Ezewele.

The lead was then doubled five minutes before the break when goalscorer Darlington turned provider as his cross was headed home by Winters.

Sandy added: "I know sometimes when you go into games and the team doesn't want to come out at you then it can be hard to lift yourselves and raise your game.

"We were never in danger of losing the game but it's where I want us to really push on and turn the screw on teams a bit by getting that third and fourth goal.

"It will be a tougher test against Macclesfield and we need to make sure that our levels are at 100 percent now so we're ready to start the season."

Spalding will complete their pre-season programme on Saturday with a trip to Northern Premier League Midlands Division side Quorn.
