Spalding United chief executive Leigh Porter on their start to the new season
Chief executive Leigh Porter insists Spalding United will not be resting on their laurels after a promising start to the new campaign.
The Tulips have won their opening two matches in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division after being beaten in the play-off last season.
They host Shepshed Dynamo at the Sir Halley Stewart ground tomorrow (Saturday) in the FA Cup looking for a hat-trick of wins.
Porter said: "It feels different. It feels better, but points on the board is the only thing you can gauge yourself with. That's all we can be measured by.
"Last season we weren’t good enough because there were two teams which finished on more points than us. We had to look at why and make changes.
"We've made a change in manager and personnel and those first two league games have looked good, but we’ll never sit back at any point – as a management team and as owners – and be happy.
"We can always do more and look at every detail of how we can improve.
"We're happy to win our first two league games of the season but, if we win 1-0, we want to win 5-0. If we win 5-0, we want to win 10-0.
"The first game of the season the lads were disappointed they conceded, but that’s what we want to see."
Spalding started with a 3-1 away win at Walsall Wood on Saturday before a 2-0 home success over AFC Rushden & Diamonds on Tuesday night.
It was the perfect start to a campaign where Spalding hope to take the next step up the non-league pyramid.
Porter added: "We're only two games in and achieved nothing since we came in two seasons ago. We've not won a single title or cup or got promotion.
"The standards we've set, we've failed to bring success to Spalding United. So, when that happens, you're even more determined and we're even more enthusiastic now about the football club than when we came in as we've grown to love it and the people around us.
"We think Spalding could sustain a higher level of football. Done the right way we could have National League football in Spalding town centre.
"Our aspirations are to be promoted and the best way to do that is finish top so you don’t have to go through the heartbreak of play-offs, which we know about.
"We will all pull together. After the play-off final last year, we drew a line under it and said we'd work hard to do better next season."
The Tulips have strengthened their squad during the close with a number of new faces arriving for the campaign.
Summer signings Dan Sweeney, Jordan Graham and Wilson Carvalho have already opened their goalscoring account while goalkeeper Tony Breeden made a crucial stop on Tuesday night when the game against Diamonds was scoreless with Stefen Morley then providing the assist for Sam Cartwright to break the deadlock.
Porter commented: "We've put a lot of time and effort into the squad and Elliot and his management team have worked harder than anybody else.
"We haven't just thrown the team together, we've looked at the right players in the right positions and the right personalities, and done our own research.
"We knew we couldn't rip it up and start again. We knew we needed the core of the squad that was so successful last year and build on that."
Saturday's preliminary round tie against Shepshed kicks-off at 3pm with the Tulips hoping for another good turn-out of support after 470 came through the gates in the midweek win.
