South Lincs Steelers open their Peterborough Walking Football League campaign.
South Lincs Steelers Blues secured a victory double in their first matches of the Peterborough Walking Football League season.
With a new three division format this season, the Blues are in the second tier before hopefully stepping back up to the top flight next term.
They faced Stamford Strollers B in their opening match on Sunday and secured a 3-1 victory against some familiar faces.
Blues started well and were carving out plenty of chances for striker Steve Hammond.
They got the deserved breakthrough after nine minutes when Hammond crossed from the right and Mark Allen finished with a fine right-foot volley.
Stamford got a shock equaliser two minutes later but it was short-lived as Hammond once again turned provider, just 30 seconds later, linking well with Michael Wells who made it 2-1.
Alan Wells made his league debut at the start of the second half and, although Stamford were still in the game, Blues were never in real trouble.
They looked to have sealed the win with five minutes remaining as Michael Wells scored the third and decisive goal, pouncing on a loose pass and finishing well.
However, the referee deemed he was too quick and brandished a blue card for his third offence and Steelers were a man short for the next three minutes.
Stamford put the pressure on, but the-ever dependable Pete Paget made some good blocks and goalkeeper Chris Briston was forced into the odd save when required.
Having held out and, with Michael Wells back on the pitch, Alan Wells took the ball high up the pitch on the left, opened his body and curled a great side foot shot into the net to wrap up the win.
They then faced new opposition in Hampton FC Blues where a good day at the office was completed with a 4-1 win.
Blues took the game to Hampton and scored in the first minute after a square ball from Hammond found Allen in the centre who side-footed into the top corner for a fine goal.
The second followed on five minutes after a quick free kick that Michael Wells put away.
Plenty of possession followed but Steelers were got caught in a three-on-two and Hampton pulled one back.
Alan Wells again came on for Allen in the second half and bagged his second goal of the day within a minute.
With six minutes to play, Hammond intercepted the ball and fed Michael Wells who made it 4-1 with his second goal of the game and third for the day.
South Lincs Steelers Whites were on the wrong end of a six-goal defeat against Whittlesey in their Division Three clash.
The Whites started brightly, creating the first chances through James Collins twice and Phil Cooper who had a good effort saved.
Captain Steve Earth impressed on his league debut, marshalling the midfield and breaking forward at times.
With 30 seconds left of the first half, Whittlesey found a player unmarked on the left flank who rifled his shot into the goal.
After a quiet first half for Dan Smith in goal, he had his work cut out after the break from the first minute, making some good saves but Steelers were soon 2-0 down.
Earth made a good interception and his blocked shot fell to Lee Nolan who shot well but a deflection took the ball onto the intersection of the crossbar and post.
Whittlesey scored two more goals with some fine strikes into the top corners and the contest was over.
Whites kept going of course but a further two Whittlesey goals made it a rather harsh 6-0 scoreline.
They then went down to a 5-1 reversal against Harborough Hornets who went two goals up inside six minutes.
They then added a suspect third goal with Steelers contesting that the ball was in the area when the player toe-poked it into the net but the goal was given.
Earth pulled one back with a pile-driver into the top left corner, getting his deserved goal for his and the team's efforts.
A misheard whistle from the other pitch stopped Whites and Harborough bagged a fourth which was soon followed by a fifth.
Nolan was fouled when on goal but there was another defender in close proximity so the offender only received a three minute sin bin at the end of the first half.
A battling second half had its chances and better defensive performances which was a positive to take.
