Spalding United beat Matlock Town in their FA Cup first qualifying round replay
Tyler Winters struck an extra-time winner as Spalding United made FA Cup progress on Tuesday night.
Winters converted the rebound after his initial penalty had been saved to earn the Tulips a 1-0 away win in their first qualifying round replay at Matlock Town.
It sets up a home tie with National League North side Alfreton in the next round on Saturday, September 14, after Spalding earned their first win under new manager Jimmy Dean while keeping a second successive clean sheet.
Dean said: "It was a fantastic feeling and I was really happy with it.
"We started quite well ironically but then fell away. I won't deny it but I was quite worried because I don't really know where we're at fitness-wise.
"There's no doubt about it we would have been a couple of goals down if it wasn't for Tony Breeden.
"We needed half-time but rectified what we thought was going wrong and I thought we were the better team with the better chances from the second half onwards."
The Tulips had made just one change to their starting line-up following Saturday's goalless draw with the Gladiators - who parted company with manager Nicky Law on Monday - as Joe Nyahwema came in for Layton Ndukwu.
Jonny Ngandu and Jordan Nicholson both fired efforts wide of the home goal before Breeden produced a fine double save to first thwart Benni Ndlovu and then keep out Sam Essien's follow-up.
Breeden then saved well from Tomas Poole's effort before James Morris' follow up was blocked on the line to ensure the first half finished goalless.
A fine save from home goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill denied Jordan Graham early in the second half before Sam Bennett and Ndukwu were both introduced.
Bennett produced a smart turn and shot that was saved by Ravenhill before Morris was again denied by Breeden at the other end as the tie headed into extra-time.
Winters was brought on at the end of 90 minutes and he headed a good chance wide before he was brought down by Ravenhill in the area six minutes into the first period of extra-time.
Ravenhill kept out Winters' penalty but the former Peterborough United youngster reacted first to convert the rebound.
Winters could have doubled Spalding's lead after a slick Tulips breakaway but he shot straight at Ravenhill.
Spalding continued to create the better chances with Bennett shooting over from the edge of the area and Winters rattling the post with a shot from 25 yards.
Breeden tipped over an effort from Jay Glover who then tried his luck from distance towards the end of the game but again the Spalding goalkeeper was equal to the shot as the Tulips saw out the remainder of the contest.
Dean added: "The substitutes impacted superbly.
"Tyler and Sam were both really good when they came on while Danny Draper and Kieron Dawes helped lock the game off.
"It was Layton's first involvement since April on Saturday and he looked a lot more like himself on Tuesday night and I was pleased with him."
"We were much the better side in the second half and the players ran through a brick wall for me and the club."
Spalding return to Southern League Premier Division Central action on Saturday when they entertain AFC Sudbury at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.
The Tulips are currently second-from-bottom of the table while their Suffolk visitors are 12th having taken six points from their opening five games.
