Ian Withers was the winner of the first Tigers Open




Ian Withers was the winner of the first Tigers Open held on Sunday.

He defeated Simon Hill in the final of the inaugural event at the Tigers Bar and Social Club.

More than 30 players took part in the first tournament and, due to its success, organisers plan to hold monthly competitions.

Alan Wright said: "I was very pleased with how the first tournament went and I'm looking forward to the next one in July."

Entry was £10 per player with all monies split between the main event and a plate competition for those exiting in the first round.

Withers defeated Fin Rodgers in the quarter-finals while Hill defeated Nick Quantrill.

They were joined in the last four by Mark Waters and Gary Mace who overcame Tom Atkin and Alfie Reynolds respectively.

Withers beat Waters in his semi-final before winning 3-1 in the final against Hill who had got the better of Mace in the last four.

The final was a competitive contest as Withers hit a 180 maximum and also had scores of 140 (twice), 139 and 100 (three times) en-route to victory.

He took the £100 top prize with runner-up Hill landing £50. The losing semi-finalists received £20 with the quarter-finalists getting £10.

The plate competition saw Brett Butler, Brandon Matthews, Lewis Lockwood and Chris Chamberlain all reach the last four after quarter-final wins over Craig Thomas, Kenzie Lee, Kev Newton and Harvey Eldridge respectively.

Butler beat Matthews in his semi-final to progress along with Chamberlain who defeated Lockwood.

Butler won the final 3-1 after a strong showing which saw him hit 100, 140 and a 142 finish to win one of the legs.

He received £40 for his victory with the runner-up getting £20. The losing semi-finalists got £10 with the quarter-finalists getting £5.

The next tournament will be held on Sunday, July 6, with one also planned for Sunday, August 17.
