Spalding Hockey Club host the first of five primary tournaments at Glen Park in Surfleet
Spalding Hockey Club have hosted the first of five primary tournaments scheduled for this school year at Glen Park in Surfleet.
Eighteen teams from 13 primary schools participated in the tournament which gave many of the 150 children their first opportunity to represent their school at hockey.
As usual with the first tournament, there was no grading of the leagues with all teams considered to be at beginner level.
In League A, Monkshouse made a great start to their season by winning all four of their matches.
They beat John Harrox (1-0), Gosberton Academy and Tower Road (both 2-0) and Ayscoughfee (3-0) to top the table.
Gosberton Academy also had an impressive start after recording 1-0 wins over Ayscoughfee and John Harrox and ended their afternoon with a hard fought scoreless draw against Tower Road to clinch the second spot.
Tower Road started strongly in League B with a win (5-0) over St Norbert's but were held to a draw (2-2) by fellow Bostonians St Thomas' in their second game. They then claimed the top spot with a win (3-1) over St John's in the final deciding game.
St John's had previously recorded impressive victories over St Thomas's (3-0) and St Norbert's (2-0) but had to settle for second spot.
In League C, Tower Road once again demonstrated their strength in depth as they won all four matches in this group.
Wins over Gosberton Risegate (1-0), St Thomas' (3-0), Eye Primary (2-0) and Pinchbeck East (4-0) saw them comfortable league winners.
Gosberton Risegate showed a great deal of promise with a couple of 4-0 wins over Pinchbeck East and St Thomas' and a goalless draw against Eye Primary saw them clinch second place.
Spalding Parish swept all before them in League D, winning all of their games without conceding a goal.
They recorded impressive victories over Surfleet Primary (2-0), Gosberton Academy (2-0) and Ayscoughfee (4-0).
Surfleet Primary bounced back after their first loss to beat Ayscoughfee (3-1) and Gosberton Academy (1-0) and secure second place.
Tournament two is scheduled for Friday, November 15.
