Your first step to the World Cup finals? Referees course for Lincolnshire’s wannabe whistleblowers to be held

A referees course for wannabe whistleblowers across the county will be held this month.

Whether it’s your first step to the World Cup finals or a hobby to take up now your playing days are over, completing the course will leave any successful applicant to qualify to become an official in junior football, and open age if they are over the age of 16.

It will be run by the Lincolnshire FA, whose chairman Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam recently highlighted that the number of registered referees in the county had grown by almost 25% last year.

The course is open for anyone aged 14 and over and is designed to equip new referees with the key skills and knowledge they will need to be able to referee grassroots football matches safely and effectively.

The course comprises online learning on the laws of the game and face to face training.

On top of the online modules, there is 11 hours of face to face training (normally one evening, followed by a full day), which mixes training room work with practical activity on a pitch.

The training room work includes fun, interactive quizzes, how to establish rapport and build relationships with players and coaches, recognising and dealing with foul challenges and handball and managing offside.

To qualify as a referee, you must also referee five games after you have attended the face to face training, where you would be supported by the county football association.

The course costs £110, but anyone who completes the course and decides to officiate in the Boston Men’s League will be able to claim back £100 - £50 after completing six games and a further £50 when after 20 matches.

The face to face sessions will be held at Boston United’s Jakemans Community Stadium on Thursday, August 22 (6pm-9pm) and Saturday, August 25 (9am-5pm).
