Warners Midlands printers in Bourne spend £10m on new factory and printing press

A printers have spent £10m on a new factory and printing press that can print faster than Usain Bolt can run.

Warners Midlands, in Bourne, unveiled the new 3,000 sq ft factory containing the £6m printing press on Friday last week inside the new £4m factory at its Manor Lane base.

The ceremony was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Toby Dennis, who was given a guided tour of the new facilities, which will allow them to double their production space and the amount they can print.

Marketing manager Michael Warner said: “It’s very exciting.

“It’s been something that has been planned for such a long time and it is very pleasing to see it now.

“The factory ground works started last year, the printing press was installed in November and we should be up and running by Easter and that’s a conservative estimate.

“With the new printing press, we can print, dry and fold at 13 metres a second which is faster than Usain Bolt can run.

“We’re going to be retiring one of our presses which is about 17 years old and this new one will allow us to double our capacity because it’s much more efficient.”

The introduction of German-built Lithoman 3 printing press is described as an ‘uncontested leader’ in high volume printing.

Warners employs about 236 people on its 10 acre site and prints about 700 titles.

Managing director for 23 years, Philip Warner, added: “In the last 10 years, we have invested a total of £30m in the business.

“It’s what we do and we want to keep improving the business for the future and making it more efficient.”

He added the press was the ‘most expensive’ in the company’s history and will allow Warners to maintain its ‘competitive edge in an increasingly tough market’.

Print trials have already begun on the new printing press and eventually, all three shifts at the factory will be using it.

Warners staff also presented a cheque to representatives from Bourne-based charity Don’t Lose Hope, which provides access to therapeutic and emotional support.

Over the last five months, the company have raised £5,000 through a variety of activities, including a golf day and raffle.

On Friday evening, a celebration event for the firm’s staff was held to mark the new development.
