Wilko staff in Stamford receive a round of applause as the store closes for the final time

Customers acknowledged the end of an era when Wilko closed for the final time in Stamford this evening (Tuesday).

Shop assistants received a round of applause following their final shift at the store, which has been part of the town’s High Street for 40 years.

Radio presenter Rob Persani, from Rutland and Stamford Sound, organised the send-off.

He said: “Wilko is a shop I’ve grown up with, even before I moved here. There’s a lot of love for Wilko and it’s a part of our lives that you assumed would always be here.

“I thought the staff deserved some kind of send-off after 40 years and it’s lovely that so many people turned up and feel the same way I do.”

Rob led the applause and three cheers for the staff, who thanked the public for their support since the closure was announced.

Last week it was announced the premises could be taken over by Poundland, which has entered a deal to take on 71 Wilko stores.

Oakham’s branch of Wilko is set to close next Monday (September 25) with Rob planning a similar goodbye for its staff.
