A jeweller has been granted permission to put up a statue of a Roman god on his building.

Paul Rose, on behalf of Dawson of Stamford, applied to add the 1.9m gilded statue of Mercury to the top of the premises at 6 Red Lion Square.

According to the application, the building had a similar statue in the 19th century. The front of the building is also being restored.

The application for the statue, which also includes lighting, was approved by South Kesteven District Council on August 17.
