A keen cyclist who clocks up thousands of miles a year has pledged to support the NSPCC in Peterborough by taking part in a 100-mile cycling challenge this summer.

Richard Monkhouse from Stretton, Rutland, works for Rawlinsons Accountancy Firm in Peterborough and is a member of the NSPCC Peterborough Business Support Group.

He has signed up for this year’s Prudential Ride London Cycle Race on July 29, and hopes to raise £1,000 for the NSPCC’s Peterborough Service Centre.

Richard said: “I have been cycling for about 10 years. There are loads of these events on every weekend around the country and I do quite a few of them – probably six to 10 every year.

“I reckon that tallies up at around four or five thousand miles spent on my bike per year, so training for a 100-mile cycle ride isn’t too bad. Don’t get me wrong though, 100 miles still hurts – I’m just used to the pain!

“I’m part of the Peterborough Business Support Group for the NSPCC, and we’re all about raising money for them.

“The work that the NSPCC do here in the city is incredible and I just wanted to do my bit for them. I’ve set a fundraising goal of around £1,000, but I would like to raise as much as possible.

“I’ve been trying to do this particular event for five years and I haven’t managed to get on the ballot, so I’m really excited that I can finally do it for such a good cause.”

Sue Whitwood, NSPCC Peterborough Service Centre Manager, said: “I wish Richard the best of luck for his 100-mile cycle race – it’s no mean feat and it’s brilliant that he is supporting our work. Without people like Richard, who give up their time to fund raise for the NSPCC, we wouldn’t be able to help as many children as we do.”
