Baston in the Blitz 2019 'very, very successful'

You could have been forgiven for thinking there was a timewarp in Baston over the weekend at the hugely successful Baston in the Blitz event.

The crowds that packed onto the Brudenell Playing Fields in the village on Saturday and Sunday were taken back to the Second World War during the height of the Blitz.

The music, style and spirit of Britain's finest hour was celebrated with the likes of tanks and re-enactments from the 1940s period.

Now in its sixth year, the event was raising money for the upkeep of the playing fields and provides a great way to honour the past, educate and preserve important British history for the future.

Alan Hutchins, event organiser, said: "It was very successful and we had big crowds in on both days.

"There was lots for people to see and do and was our biggest event so far.

"The place was absolutely heaving with people and its sufficient to say it was one of the best we've done.

"We were very lucky with the weather for the whole weekend.

"The rain held off until 7pm on Sunday evening when it was long closed.

"We had a big collection of tanks and armoured cars.

"There were 100 re-enactors, both German and British soldiers, with lots of ammunition and lots of 'oohs' and 'ahhs' from the crowd.

"It was very, very impressive.

"We also had nearly 80 living history groups of various types - British, French and German.

"There were over 60 vintage traders selling all kinds of goods and we had non-stop entertainment in the marquee from some of the country's finest vintage performers.

"It was very, very successful.

"The money we raise from the event goes back towards the playing fields in Baston because they are self-sufficient.

"We don't get any council support or anything like that so we rely on hiring out the hall and the playing fields for events such as this.

"I would like to thank my committee for all their efforts and also the Trott family and I think that's it.

"We get by on a small band of helpers and committee to put the event on."
