A non-league football enthusiast has written a book about a historic football league that includes many of the area’s clubs.

Andy, 64, from Northampton, said: “The Stamford area has such a rich history of clubs competing in the United Counties League.

“Bourne Town won the league in the 1970s, Stamford got to the FA Vase Final at Wembley a few times and a couple of years ago, Oakham United were the first Rutland team to compete in the United Counties League.

“Stamford are a big part of the history of league throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s before they moved up to the next level.

“You’ve also got Deeping Rangers and Blackstones who have played in the league.”

Andy, who works in the car industry, began writing the book three years ago which involved extensive research, including many trips to various libraries.

It was launched to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the United Counties League which is being celebrated this year.

He added: “I was involved in the United Counties League for 35 years with Northampton Spencer up until a few years ago and this book has been a real labour of love for me.

“It was a real ambition of mine get this stuff out for everyone to see.

“I wanted the book to have all the stuff that is hidden away so people can see it.”

Andy’s book costs £15 and can be purchased by calling Wendy Newey, the league secretary of the United Counties League, by calling 01733 330056.
